Description
What is Vishwakarma Puja?
Vishwakarma Puja marks the reverence of Lord Vishwakarma, the celestial engineer credited with creating the Sthapatya Veda (the science of architecture and engineering). According to Hindu scriptures, he built Dwarka for Lord Krishna, Pushpak Vimana for Ravana, Trishul for Lord Shiva, Vajra for Indra, Sudarshana Chakra for Lord Vishnu, and even the Jagannath Temple in Puri. As the divine craftsman, Lord Vishwakarma symbolizes creativity, productivity, and the spirit of engineering excellence.
Significance of Vishwakarma Puja
- Worship of tools and machines to seek smooth operation, efficiency, and protection from accidents.
- Widely observed in workshops, factories, industries, construction sites, and garages.
- Special images or idols of Lord Vishwakarma are installed, and Puja rituals are performed by workers, technicians, and artisans.
- Tools are not used on this day as they are symbolically offered to the deity.
- Acts as a spiritual renewal of workplace energies and reaffirms dedication to one’s profession.
Best Time to Perform Vishwakarma Puja
- Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated annually on Kanya Sankranti (usually in September).
- Exact date and muhurtham vary each year and should be selected according to Panchang or local traditions.
Vishwakarma Puja Procedure
The Puja begins with the cleansing of the workplace and tools. A mandap or altar is set up with an image or idol of Lord Vishwakarma. Devotees perform Ganapati Puja, followed by Vishwakarma Aarti, mantra chanting, and offering of flowers, fruits, sweets, incense, turmeric, and kumkum. Tools and machinery are arranged neatly and symbolically worshipped with devotion. Prayers are offered for protection from workplace accidents, enhanced skill, and progress in profession.
The ceremony concludes with distribution of prasadam, and workers usually take a break from work to participate in cultural programs, feasts, and community events.
