Mahalaya Amavasya | Sarva Pitru Amavasya Shradh

Mahalaya Amavasya, likewise named Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is a time when we honour and pay tribute to our ancestors via ceremonial observance. Pitru Paksha ends on Mahalaya Amavasya, and Devi Paksha begins. To deepen our links to the past and ensure that continuity continues, which will be highly advantageous, we must pay tribute to our ancestors. Therefore, Grah Pravesh (home warming), mundanam (child’s head tonsuring ceremony), marriage ceremonies, engagements, and other auspicious rituals are not carried out during the Pitru Paksha period. So let’s find out more information about Mahalaya Amavasya 2022 day.

Mahalaya Amavasya Significance

Mahalaya Amavasya rituals are carried out to get blessings, healthy life, and prosperity. Lord Yama bestows blessings to those performing this rite, and their families are protected from all harm.

The Hindu scriptures state that a person may attend the “tarpan” on behalf of their ancestors on the day of “Sarva Pitru Amavasya” if they fail to participate in the shraddha of their ancestors. In contrast, the first 15 days or if the date of death is unknown. Therefore, it is thought that the ancestors and forefathers visited their homes on the Mahalaya Amavasya day. Hence, they become unhappy souls and wander between the gateway of earth and heaven if their shraddha ritual is not performed on their behalf during Pitru Paksha. According to astrological research, any errors made by ancestors would appear as “Amavasya Pitra Dosh” in the horoscopes of their descendants. They, therefore, endure negative life experiences. These ancestors’ spirits do not find redemption, and they thus roam in quest of tranquillity.

However, this “Pitru Dosh” may be eliminated, and the departed soul can find redemption by executing the shraddha rites on the Mahalaya Amavasya, offering them pitra moksha. In return, the ancestors bless the family and send them all the good fortune in life. Therefore, the significance of mahalaya during the shraddha ceremonies carried out on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya is regarded as equally sacred and tranquil as those celebrated in Gaya, the holy city famous for such rites.

Mahalaya Amavasya Mythological Background

The Mahabharata epic claims that when Karna passed away, and his spirit entered heaven, he was given meals made of gold and diamonds. He questioned Yama about the cause of his pain since he was perplexed. Yama retorted that while Karna was living, he gave people all kinds of wealth, but he never provided sustenance for his gone forefathers. As a result, Karna could not present Pitru Tarpanam  to his ancestors since he did not know who they were until after he died. Then Yama permitted Karna to return to earth for 15 days (Mahalaya Paksha), allowing him to please his ancestors by providing them with food and drink. Thus, Karna carried out the ancestral rites and ascended to paradise.

According to Hindu mythology, another legend says that the Devtas (Gods) and the Rakshasas once engaged in a bloody battle (Demons). Unfortunately, both sides suffered fatalities in this battle. From Bhadrapada Bahula Paadayami till Amavasya, there was fighting. As a result, this period is known as Sastra Hatha Mahalaya. Therefore, we pay tribute to the Gods and Demons who died during that period on this day.

Mahalaya Amavasya Puja Vidhi

Hinduism holds that to live a life devoid of suffering, a person must pay back three kinds of Rinas, or debts. Deva Rina, Rishi Rina, and Pithru Rina are three Rinas, each of whom owes due to God, the guru, and the ancestors.

The son is obligated to assist his parents while living and after they have passed away. He can do so by completing the Shradh- Pind daan to free the spirits of the deceased, according to ancient beliefs. The significance of these ceremonies is mentioned in the Garuda Purana, Vayu Purana, Agni Purana, Matsya Purana, and Markandeya Purana.

Tarpan is done to present one-of-a-kind offerings to the Mahalaya Amavasya pooja for departed ancestors. Tharpan, uncooked rice and black sesame seeds dissolved in water is left after addressing the ancestors and their nakshatra. This is a rite done by men who have lost their dads. Animals and birds like the crow are permitted access to food, understanding that our ancestors may arrive in many forms and eat the food offered as sacrifices.
